As the job required some specialist skills and experience the team called up one of the Lab’s volunteers who has a background in software engineering to see if he could help. Lee explored the challenge and using his expert 3D modelling skills, reverse engineered the part using the broken original. He then 3D printed the new part using food safe filament.
Using techniques such as this mean that the life of expensive specialist kit can be greatly extended so saving significant replacement costs as well as ensuring that otherwise functioning kit doesn’t end up in landfill.
